Origin of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu

Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu, a significant martial art during the Edo period (1603–1868), originated from Fukuno Shichirouemon Masakatsu, born around 1585 in modern-day Osaka. Renowned for his martial skills, Fukuno trained in Yagyū Shinkage-ryū under Yagyū Sekishūsai and was also a Sumo master. Between 1626 and 1627, he furthered his knowledge by studying Torite no jutsu and Kenpō with Chinese monk Chin Genpin at the Southern Shaolin Monastery, enhancing his expertise in various martial arts.

Ryōi Shintō-ryū techniques:

As a traditional, or Koryū (古流) Jūjutsu style Ryōi Shintō-ryū techniques are practiced in Iai (居相 - seated phase) and Tachi-shō  (立相 - standing phase).

Koryu (古流) refers to the traditional Japanese martial arts schools or styles that were founded before the Meiji Restoration in 1868. These ancient schools teach techniques and philosophies passed down through generations, often tied to the samurai class and battlefield tactics. Koryu arts encompass a wide range of disciplines, including jujutsu, kenjutsu (swordsmanship), and iaijutsu (sword drawing), and are distinct from modern martial arts, which are often referred to as gendai budo.

Koryu arts focus not only on physical techniques but also on preserving the culture, rituals, and mindset of the samurai era. They often emphasise discipline, self-improvement, and loyalty to the school's tradition, with a deep connection to the historical context in which they were developed.

The Wednesday classes offer a distinct curriculum compared to Sundays. Odd weeks focus on Budo Taijutsu, while even weeks emphasise Ryoi Shinto Ryu, ensuring a comprehensive martial arts education. This separation of styles is crucial for a well-rounded experience, all under the expert guidance of Hanshi Peter King, a leading authority in the field.

  • Tameshigiri

Tameshigiri, meaning "test cut," became popular during Japan's Edo Period for assessing the quality of new swords. Only master swordsmen conducted these tests to eliminate skill variations, often using convicted criminals as targets. Today, tameshigiri has transformed into a martial art focused on the swordsman's skill, featuring elaborate rituals and various cutting techniques, typically with targets arranged vertically.

Participation in Tameshigiri will only be permitted once the lead instructor deems you proficient enough. Students must be over 18 to practice Tameshigiri.
