Origin of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu

Discover Ryōi Shintō Ryū Jūjutsu (良移心当流 柔術)

A rare martial art with roots in samurai tradition

Step into a world of authentic Japanese martial arts with Ryōi Shintō Ryū Jūjutsu (良移心当流 柔術) – a powerful and precise system that has been passed down since the 1600s. This unique style blends the refined techniques of the samurai with real-world practicality, focusing on balance, control, and fluid movement.

Founded by Fukuno Shichirouemon Masakatsu (福野七郎右衛門正勝), a master of both Jūjutsu and Sumo, this system was influenced by Chinese martial philosophy and battle-tested traditions. Masakatsu studied under the legendary Yagyū family and later trained with a Shaolin monk to develop a system that combines striking, grappling, and joint-locking techniques – all designed to overcome larger, stronger opponents with grace and skill.

Why Train in Ryōi Shintō Ryū?

  • Train like the samurai – learn centuries-old techniques practiced in both seated (居相 – Iai) and standing (立相 – Tachi-shō) forms.

  • Develop real-world confidence – enhance your balance, timing, and self-control.

  • Join a living tradition – become part of a rare lineage still taught today by dedicated instructors.

Unlike modern martial arts, Ryōi Shintō Ryū is part of the Koryū (古流) tradition – ancient styles founded before the modern era. These arts go beyond technique: they’re about mindset, discipline, and carrying forward the values of a time when martial arts were truly a way of life.

Whether you’re new to martial arts or an experienced practitioner looking to deepen your understanding, training in Ryōi Shintō Ryū (良移心当流) offers something rare: an opportunity to explore Japan’s warrior heritage in a supportive and focused environment.

    Tameshigiri

Tameshigiri, meaning "test cut," became popular during Japan's Edo Period for assessing the quality of new swords. Only master swordsmen conducted these tests to eliminate skill variations, often using convicted criminals as targets. Today, tameshigiri has transformed into a martial art focused on the swordsman's skill, featuring elaborate rituals and various cutting techniques, typically with targets arranged vertically.

Participation in Tameshigiri will only be permitted once the lead instructor deems you proficient enough. Students must be over 18 to practice Tameshigiri.
